Columbus with his fleet of seventeen ships and 1500 men had arrived off Dominica on November 3rd; ten days later the fleet had reached St. Croix.

Now, after five days in the Virgin Islands, on November 18th, the fleet was again underway traveling aboard were at least twenty-nine Indians from Guadeloupe and St. Croix. During the Night of the 18th, as the fleet continued sailing along the 100-mile-long southern coast of Puerto Rico, three of the natives of that island taken on in Guadeloupe - two women and one young man jumped ship and swam ashore.
